Course Descriptions

(PLEASE NOTE: the last Friday of each camp is our TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE.  All students must arrive by 9:00 am and are dismissed by 1:00 pm.

The Junior Camp offers two classes described below that are intended to complement each other. The am public speaking class focuses primarily on speech writing: organization of ideas, use of spoken language, research and development of ideas. The pm class focuses primarily on speech presentation: use of expression, gesture, voice and projection.

While the Junior program is designed for students to take both the am and pm class, each of these classes are equally valuable in developing the skills of a good speaker.

Full day students in the Junior Camp will also have the opportunity to participate in supervised lunch activities that include crafts and games.

Junior Institute PUBLIC SPEAKING:
9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Course Description: Students will participate in a variety of different exercises, activities, and improvisational games designed to develop confidence, self-esteem, and poise as a speaker. Students will learn methods of organization and other language techniques through the preparation of a variety of short speeches either informative or persuasive in nature.

What students should expect to get out of this class:

  • Students will learn a variety of methods for structuring ideas for clear and effective presentation.
  • Students will learn to use vibrant, expressive language to make their speeches more compelling and keep their audience interested and entertained.
  • Students will learn how to incorporate facts, quotes, stories and other supporting material into a speech.
  • Students will come to a better understanding of themselves, as they search their own experience to find worthwhile things to say.
  • Students will learn to develop self-control and poise under pressure.

*6th Grade Public Speaking course will be separate from students entering 4th and 5th grade.  The 6th grade course will include all of the above but also introduce the students to debate.

Junior Institute HUMOROUS, DRAMATIC, OR DUO INTERPRETATION: 
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Course Description: Students will participate in a variety of different exercises, activities, and improvisational games designed to develop confidence, self-esteem, and poise as a speaker. Students will learn interpretive techniques of voice and gesture through the memorization and presentation of a 3-5 minute selection from a piece of humorous or dramatic literature appropriate to their age. Students may present their selection individually or with a partner.

What students should expect to get out of this class:

  • Students will develop more confidence as a speaker.
  • Students will discover the joy of expressing themselves.
  • Students will learn a variety of methods for establishing character, mood, and action.
  • Students will learn greater control of their voice and body to communicate effectively.
  • Students will learn to develop self-control and poise under pressure.
  • Students will develop a greater appreciation for imagination and creativity.
